Looking Ahead: Chalk Art Festival and Competition 2013   Leave a comment

2012 Chalk Fest drawing

Sounds like Punxsutawney Phil is ready for Spring, are you? Sunny afternoons, picnics in the park, birds chirping… and the 2nd annual Chalk Art Festival and Competition! Yes, it’s back. Yes, it’s still free to register. Live music. Food vendors. Prizes. All located in beautiful Garfield Park on May 11.

The festival is for all ages and all experience levels. Bring your own chalk, or purchase a chalk kit for only $3. There is no rain date.

Register between 10:00 Am and 2:00PM at the Garfield Park Arts Center (GPAC). Work to be judged must be completed by 3:00PM. Keep drawing for fun and enjoy live music from 3:00PM – 4:00PM.

Awards will be given at 4:00PM (must be present to win). View 2012 winners here.

So clear your schedule for Mother’s Day weekend… you won’t want to miss this awesome event!

We sure had a blast at the “Live the Game” event on November 10! This was the GPAC’s first time participating in the Spirit and Place Festival, whose theme this year was “Play”. Spirit and Place Festival is right around the corner! The GPAC is excited to be a part of this great event, whose theme this year is “Play”.

Imagine stepping onto a giant board game where you and your friends and family are the game pieces. This November, the GPAC will host a day of games of epic proportions! Using the park itself as a giant game table, we invite you to play a multitude of life-sized board games, card games and challenges, creating a real-time adventure where you can “Live the Game.

Garfield Park Chalk Art Festival and Competition Important Info to Know!   Leave a comment

Will you be coming out to participate in our Chalk Festival and Competition on Saturday, May 12? Great! 

All  you need to have fun and create amazing works of art is CHALK (which you can bring or purchase for only $3!)
A few other items may make the day more enjoyable:

  • Gloves: gardening / cotton (for blending)
  • Rags or old tee shirts (for cleaning your hands)
  • Masking tape (for making straight lines)
  • A photo or sketch to work from
  • Measuring tape (to mark-off a grid if  you want to use a grid method)
  • A camera (to photograph your process and work)
  • Something to kneel on to protect your knees and artwork (cardboard, gardening pad, kneepads, etc.)
  • Sunscreen and/or a hat
When you arrive, please make sure to register at the GPAC. A space will be assigned to you and you will get a ribbon to wear.
Chalk kits can be purchased at the table as well, or if you bring your own chalk, you will be free to start creating your masterpiece!
  • Registration is from 9am – Noon; Chose from one of four fun themes: Sports, Arts, Nature, and Artist’s  Choice.
  • Artwork must be completed by 1pm for judging. Space will be provided for anyone who would like to draw for fun.
  • Enjoy live music from 1-4pm at the MacAllister Amphitheater
  • Demo artists will be on hand during the whole day–see what they are creating and ask questions!
  • Fun prizes will be awarded at 4pm

Asian Fest 2011   Leave a comment

Asian Fest

Come experience exotic art, dances, music and foods of Asia at this fun-filled festival for the entire family!

This FREE event will kick off our Asian Arts & Artists Exhibition. From India to Japan to the Philippines, many rich cultural treasures will be represented. Artworks include ceramics, paintings, textile arts and other mediums. This exhibit will be on display through July 24.

Also be sure to visit the Bonsai Show and Koi ponds at the Conservatory & Sunken Garden.
