BLACK PEARLS 2011 DESCRIPTION

Featuring original works from up-and-coming as well as established local, regional and national artists of African descent, this engaging exhibition offers a glimpse at how these artists push the visual arts into exciting territories. From textiles to traditional painting techniques, this exhibition will make you stop and rethink what is “Black Art.”

CALL FOR ENTRIES: BLACK PEARLS 2011

The Garfield Park Arts Center (GPAC), an Indy Parks and Recreation facility, is seeking original works by artists of African descent for its sixth annual Black Pearls Exhibit.  The goal of the Black Pearls exhibit is to highlight and reveal the breadth and scope of artistic diversity created by these artists. From the abstract to the surreal, from the folkloric to the highly conceptual, we seek to provide an examination that challenges the ideas surrounding what artists of African descent can and do create.

EXHIBITION DETAILS and EVENTS

A juried exhibition, Black Pearls 2011 opens Saturday, February 5, 2011 and runs through Sunday, March 27, 2011, with the opening reception occurring Saturday, February 5, 2011 from 5:00-7:00 PM.

ELIGIBILITY

Original works by artists of African descent will be considered. Work must not have been previously exhibited in any Black Pearls exhibition. All art entries are reviewed by a panel of judges from the GPAC.

CATEGORIES

Eligible media include the following: ceramics, drawings, mixed media, paintings, photography, print media, sculpture, textiles and video.

Thursday January 13, 2011 by 5pm EST.

 

 

 

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Please submit the following via email or on CD by Thursday January 13, 2011 by 5pm EST:

  • 3-7 High Resolution JPEG images of your work (Note: Slides are not acceptable. Digital format only.)
    • You can submit at least 2 images per work, which must include an overall shot of the artwork and a detail.
    • Indentify each image with your name and the slide number which correlates with its entry on the Image Annotation Sheet.
    • The JPEG should reflect the work as accurately as possible in both color and details. The GPAC reserves the right to refuse work not accurately reflected by the digital image
  • Video works can be submitted via link to a site containing the video (i.e.Youtube or personal website) or a 3-5 minute video. Audio can also be submitted on a 3-5 minute track. If submitting audio please indicate a particular track and/or segment of the track you would like reviewed. For example, state, “start at 1:15 minutes.”
  • Short Biography
  • Artists Statement
  • Image Annotation Sheet (include title of piece, date of completion, dimensions and small description if necessary)

ACCEPTED WORKS

Notifications of acceptance will be made on or before Friday, January 14, 2011. All works will need to be received at the GPAC no later than Saturday, January 28, 2011 at 4pm EST. The GPAC will not accept works that are not ready for hanging or installation and suitable for final presentation. Drawings, paintings, photography and prints must be framed under Plexiglas or glass, and wired for hanging. Installations must arrive with detailed directions for installation. In addition, please include special handling instructions for fragile pieces when they arrive.

The artist is responsible for delivery and/or shipping and insurance costs for all accepted pieces to the GPAC. Because of the potential for artwork to be damaged in the shipping process, we will contact you immediately if the work arrives damaged and provide digital photographs of the damage for your documentation. All shipped work must arrive in a prepaid container, which is suitable for return of the artwork. At the close of the exhibition, shipped work will be returned in this container with the accompanying packing materials.  As such, the GPAC will not be responsible for any damage, delay or loss in shipping; the only recourse will be against the shipping company or insurer.

Works that were delivered in person will need to be picked up March 29-31, 2011 between the hours of 2:00PM – 9:00 PM.

SELLING WORK AT BLACK PEARLS 2011

Artists may offer for sale any works accepted for Black Pearls 2011. In the event of a sale, the GPAC receives a 10% commission.

ABOUT THE GARFIELD PARK ARTS CENTER

The GPAC in Indianapolis, IN, is a family-friendly Indy Parks and Recreation facility that engages the community in diverse, artistic and cultural exhibits, arts classes and special events. It features performing arts spaces, visual arts galleries, classrooms and a literary arts library. The galleries, rich with exhibits of local and regional art, are open to the public at no charge Tuesday through Sunday.

THE GARFIELD PARK ARTS CENTER EXHIBITION SPACE

The exhibit space is equipped with a professional, museum quality hanging system. The primary hanging spaces are 45’ long by 7’ tall and 51’ long x 9’ tall.  There are additional smaller spaces ranging from 2.5’x4.5’ to 2’x3.5’.  Changeable gallery lighting is hung in the room.

The room offers a combination of wall surfaces including brick, mortar and fabric.  Walls are neutrally painted and or covered.  There are many beautiful architectural elements including two large fireplaces in the gallery space.

INSURANCE OF WORK, LIABILITY and PHOTOGRAPHIC RELEASE for THE GARFIELD PARK ARTS CENTER

If you apply to be an exhibiting artist for the 2011 Black Pearls Exhibition you agree to the following:

I agree to release and hold harmless the Department of Parks and Recreation and the Consolidated City of Indianapolis/Marion County, its employees, agents and subcontractors, (the “Indemnitees”) from any and all liability for negligence and/or any claim, judgment, loss, liability, cost or expense (including, without limitation, claims for damages, lost or stolen Property, and attorney’s fees) arising out of my participation in the Activity.  I understand that insurance will not be provided for me, and that I must provide my own insurance if I so choose.

I further agree to indemnify and hold harmless the Indemnitees from any and all loss, damage, liability, cost or expense that the Indemnitees may incur or suffer as a result of any claim of any kind whatsoever arising out of my participation in the Activity.

Additionally, I hereby consent to and authorize Indy Parks & Recreation to take photographs and/or video of my artwork and edit, alter, copy, exhibit, publish or distribute these images solely for advertising and promotional purposes without payment or any other consideration in perpetuity.  I waive the right to inspect or approve the finished product.

Upon acceptance a copy of the above agreement must be signed by the artist and returned to the GPAC prior to the exhibit hang.  The form can be signed and returned by email to lesley.meier@indy.gov or FAX to 317-327-7064.
